Shanghai Expo 2010
Design + Drawings. With Livia Di Mario. Engineering by Francesco Balducci.
An exploration of the concept of symbolic architecture, this project was designed for the competition for the italian pavillion at the 2010 world expo in Shanghai.
The first ring is perforated aluminum. The density and size of the holes draw the familiar image of the colosseum. The cinematographic effect is particularly visible at night when the facade is illuminated from the back. The second ring is made of COR-TEN to resemble traditional stonework. Capers plants placed in the roof descends on the facade to mimic the vegetation that grows on the ruins of ancient Rome. A symbol of the Italian culture and its popular image turns into a real object and what you expect is what you get.
